The Brain Can Use Fat as an Energy Source

July 4, 2025

Researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine have concluded that the brain can use fat as an energy source. It was previously thought that the brain exclusively relied on glucose. However, new data shows that during the active work of neurons in synapses (the connections between nerve cells), fat droplets are broken down, releasing fatty acids, which are then used by mitochondria for energy production. This discovery could be significant for understanding the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
