Scientists Achieve Offspring from Two Fathers

June 29, 2025

Scientists have achieved offspring from two fathers for the first time - the experiment has so far only been conducted on mice. Researchers from Shanghai University combined two sperm cells inside a nucleus-free egg cell. Then, one of the genomes was edited to ensure normal embryo development. Out of 259 transplanted embryos, only two survived in the end - both males. They grew to adulthood and produced healthy offspring when mated with females. If this technology is adapted for humans, the child would technically have three parents because a small part of the DNA would still come from the donor egg cell.
