In Japan, a new internet speed record was set by transmitting 1.02 petabits (127,500 GB) per second over a distance of 1808 km. The technology has been tested for several years, but similar speeds were previously only achieved over distances of up to 63 km. Standard-sized fiber optics are used, but with 19 channels inside instead of one as usual. However, all of this is still in laboratory conditions, and there is no word on when it will be available in real networks.
