Just three nights without proper sleep can seriously affect the body. Scientists divided participants into two groups: the first slept for 8 hours, the second for 4 hours. After each sleep phase, the groups undertook a short cycling exercise and had blood tests. It was found that sleep deprivation caused a number of changes in the blood that increase the risk of heart diseases such as heart failure, ischemia, and atrial fibrillation.
