Men Die More Often from Broken-Heart Syndrome

May 20, 2025

Men die more often from 'broken-heart syndrome' than women. After a traumatic event, such as a divorce or the death of a loved one, some people experience chest pain and shortness of breath. This is the result of a condition commonly known as 'broken-heart syndrome'. Due to stress, the body produces stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which interfere with the heart's ability to contract normally. While women suffer more frequently from this syndrome, men are twice as likely to die from it. This is simply because men generally have less social support that could help them manage stress.
