Aoshima is a small island in southern Japan that has literally been overtaken by cats. Fishermen once brought them there to control rodents, and the furry creatures eventually settled in and multiplied so much that they all had to be captured and sterilized. For a long time, the fluffy felines attracted crowds of tourists to the island, but now their numbers are rapidly declining: as of today, there are 80 cats and only four permanent residents left.
