Scientists Extract Gold from Lead at the Large Hadron Collider

May 11, 2025

Scientists have started extracting gold from lead at the Large Hadron Collider - no magic involved, just pure nuclear physics. When lead nuclei fly past each other at a minimal distance, their electromagnetic fields knock protons out of the nuclei. In rare cases, a gold atom remains. In one cycle of such events, 86 billion were counted. Newton and others struggled for centuries with the mystery of obtaining the Philosopher's Stone. And now it's a reality.
