New Microorganisms Discovered in the Mariana Trench

March 11, 2025

In the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on the planet, more than 7,000 new species of microorganisms have been discovered. Chinese scientists collected samples back in 2020, but the analysis was only completed now. As a result, almost 90% of the microbes brought up by the bathyscaphe were unknown to science - they lived at a depth of 6-11 km and were perfectly adapted to extremely high pressures, cold, and nutrient scarcity. Incidentally, only 22 people have ever been to the Mariana Trench.
