Doctors have cured children who were blind from birth for the first time. Now, the children can recognize their parents' faces, find toys, and even read and write. The young patients were diagnosed with congenital amaurosis, caused by a mutation of the AIPL1 gene, which left them completely blind. Medical professionals inserted healthy copies of the gene into their retinas. Five years after the surgery, the improvements have been maintained.
