Sharks with Swollen Brains Found on Canadian and US Shores

February 9, 2025

Sharks with swollen brains have started to wash up on the shores of Canada and the USA. Something is affecting the brains of the predators, and scientists don't know what it is: the fish showed no signs of injury or starvation. In total, nine great white sharks were found washed ashore in pristine condition on the Atlantic coasts from 2022 to 2024. It should be noted that until 2023, no sharks with meningoencephalitis had been found in Canadian territory for at least 30 years, so Canadian wildlife defenders are particularly concerned about these incidents. Sharks are believed to rarely suffer from infectious diseases because they have a very strong immune system. Perhaps some new and yet unknown bacteria have killed the sharks.
