Chile's Construction of the World's Largest Telescope

November 29, 2024

For 10 years, the Extremely Large Telescope has been under construction in the Chilean desert, set to become the largest in human history. Its primary mirror will be approximately four times larger than any existing telescope, allowing it to capture 15 times more light and surpass the Hubble Space Telescope's detail by 16 times. Construction began back in 2014 and as of today, the telescope is just over 50% complete. It is planned to be operational by 2028, and the project's costs may exceed $1.5 billion.
