Astronomers have taken the first-ever photograph of a dying star outside the Milky Way. The red supergiant WOH G64 is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 160,000 light-years away from us, and is 2000 times larger than the Sun. Over the next 10-100 thousand years, it will turn into a supernova and explode powerfully. The image was captured using the new GRAVITY instrument installed on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in the Atacama Desert, which combines data from several of its mirrors.
