Iceland: Leading the Four-Day Workweek Revolution?

October 30, 2024

Iceland could become the first country in the world to have a nationwide four-day workweek. An experiment in reducing workdays without lowering pay has proven effective: employees experience less burnout and the unemployment rate is the lowest in Europe. The maintained and even increased productivity is explained by employees being able to spend more time with family and rest, resulting in full commitment at work and less distraction. Iceland is one of many countries actively testing shortened workweeks. For example, Belgium allows choosing four workdays instead of five, distributing hours into longer shifts, while in the UAE, one can work with a shortened Friday schedule.
