Ethiopia could save coffee from climate change

October 28, 2024

Nearly all of the world's coffee harvest comes from just two varieties - Arabica and Robusta. Both of these plants are considered vulnerable to warming and reductions in rainfall. Scientists have created a model and concluded that in the future, Arabica can be grown in Ethiopia, whereas in other regions, climate change will make this more difficult or impossible. Currently, up to 31% of Ethiopia's territory is suitable for Arabica production. By 2080, the area of suitable land will double or more, but it will shift to the north and northwest of the country.
