Antarctica is actively greening

October 19, 2024

A new study has shown that over the past four decades, vegetation cover has increased tenfold. The Antarctic Peninsula is warming faster than the global average, and extreme heat events are becoming more frequent. Everyone was shocked by satellite images showing moss appearing amidst the ice. Soils in Antarctica are mostly poor or absent, but the increase in vegetation will add organic matter and promote soil formation, paving the way for other plants.
