The Corinth Canal in Greece

October 12, 2024

The Corinth Canal in Greece is the narrowest navigable canal on the planet, a dream that spanned over 2000 years. Originally, there was a desire to dig it as early as the 7th century BC, but for a long time, it was considered impossible. It wasn't until 1882 that the Greeks took on the project, hiring experienced architects from the Panama Canal, and completed the construction in 1893. The canal is 6.4 km long (with the shortened path being about 400 km), 25 meters wide, and the walls rise to a height of 80 meters. Nowadays, mainly cruise liners and tourist ships pass through it – mostly under tow to avoid eroding the walls.
