The End of Line Judges

October 12, 2024

The oldest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon, will for the first time in its 147-year history dispense with line judges - they will be replaced by artificial intelligence. From 2025, a specially trained neural network, which has already been tested at this year's tournament and previously used at the Australian and US championships, will determine outs and serve faults instead of humans. Wimbledon annually attracted about 300 line judges. Organizers thanked them 'for their many years of service' and noted that the technology is 'reliable enough for such an important step'.
