Microsoft to Get Its Own Nuclear Power Plant for Data Centers

September 24, 2024

Microsoft will have its own nuclear power plant to power its data centers. The tech giant has entered an agreement with the owner of the decommissioned Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, under which it will be restored and brought online by 2028. This will be the first instance in the U.S. of a nuclear power plant reactivation and the first case where all the energy is directed to a single customer. Interestingly, one of the reactors at this plant was decommissioned after the largest nuclear accident in U.S. history in 1979, while the second reactor operated until 2019 but was then closed due to financial issues.
