Consequences of the Olympic swimming race

August 8, 2024

Belgian athlete Claire Michel was hospitalized with E. coli after swimming in the Seine during the Olympic Games in Paris. Other swimmers had previously experienced nausea. Before the games, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo swam in the Seine to prove that the river's water was sufficiently cleaned to hold the events. President Macron also said he was ready to swim but ultimately did not. After the announced cleaning, independent experts detected a dangerous level of E. coli in the river, causing diarrhea, vomiting, and pneumonia.
