Champagne's Birthday

August 4th is considered the birthday of Champagne. On this day in 1668, as the legend goes, the steward of the Abbey of Hautvillers, located in the heart of Champagne, Father Pierre Pérignon treated the brothers to a new drink filled with tiny gas bubbles and crowned with a frothy 'crown'. In his honor, a company was later named that produces expensive and famous sparkling wines in Pérignon's hometown – the city of Champagne.
