Scientists have discovered that melamine sponges, which remove dirt even without cleaning agents, gradually lose microplastic fibers, making them potentially harmful to the environment. Similar to erasers, melamine sponges wear off during use, leaving small particles with microplastic fibers measuring from 10 to 405 micrometers on the surface being cleaned.
