Free Alcohol for Homeless People in the USA: A New Approach to Reduce Alcohol-related Harm

May 18, 2024

Homeless people in the USA are being provided with free alcohol in an effort to reduce the consumption of harmful alcohol and the number of poisonings. This program, implemented in San Francisco, allocates $5 million per year to offer a selection of beer, vodka, or wine to choose from at designated locations. Each person is given 3-4 servings per day, turning it into a real bar-like experience for the homeless. The aim is to provide a safer alternative to cheap and dangerous alcohol, ultimately promoting harm reduction in this vulnerable population.
