World's first artificial intelligence law approved

March 27, 2024

The European Parliament has approved the world's first law regulating the use of artificial intelligence. 523 people voted in favor, 46 people voted against, and 49 abstained. The law prohibits the use of images of people from the internet or surveillance cameras to create facial recognition databases, as well as for social credit systems. It also includes a ban on the use of biometric identification systems by law enforcement agencies and predictive policing activities where crimes are predicted by artificial intelligence. In case of violations, companies face fines of up to 35 million euros or 7% of global turnover.
