Astronomers Discover the Oldest Black Hole in the Universe

December 16, 2023

Astronomers have discovered the oldest black hole in the universe, which is 13.2 billion years old. It formed 470 million years after the Big Bang. The mass of the black hole is approximately a million times larger than that of the Sun. It was detected using the James Webb Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory in the GN-z11 galaxy. Scientists note that this discovery completely changes our understanding of the formation of supermassive black holes. It was previously believed that they are formed over time from several such objects.
