New Island Emerges in Japan after Volcanic Eruption

November 15, 2023

A new island with a diameter of 100 meters has appeared in Japan after a volcanic eruption. Scientists believe that a so-called phreatomagmatic explosion occurred during the eruption. The molten magma came into contact with water, causing a powerful shockwave. During the eruption, plumes of smoke and ash rose more than 50 meters into the air every few minutes. Huge rocks were expelled from the ocean floor onto the surface of the ocean. The new island may increase in size and change its shape if the eruptions continue.
