Chinese Scientists Develop Stronger Silk

September 27, 2023

Chinese scientists have bred silk moths whose silk is stronger than Kevlar. Researchers from Donghua University extracted the protein MiSp from the spider Araneus ventricosus and implanted it into ordinary silkworms. As a result, they were able to produce transgenic silkworms whose silk was approximately twice as strong as their conventional counterparts, while also being more resistant to stretching and other mechanical loads. In terms of its qualities, it was comparable to Kevlar and genuine spider silk.
