Scientists create bacteria that break down plastic in the ocean

Bioengineers from North Carolina have taken bacteria Vibrio natriegens and Ideonella sakaiensis and genetically modified them to create a microorganism capable of degrading polyethylene terephthalate in saltwater. It is possible that this microorganism will help eradicate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
