Scientists have discovered substances on a distant exoplanet that are emitted by marine algae. Astronomers have detected gases in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18 b that could indicate the presence of an ocean, as well as organic compounds that are only emitted by living organisms. The telescope has also identified signs of the organic molecule dimethyl sulfide in the atmosphere of K2-18 b. On our planet, this is a byproduct of bacterial and microscopic algae activity. K2-18 b is located 120 light-years away from Earth and orbits within the so-called habitable zone.
