Scientists Find Microplastics in Human Heart

August 27, 2023

Scientists have found microplastics in the human heart. In an experiment, researchers collected tissue and blood samples from fifteen individuals who underwent heart surgery, and then analyzed the obtained data. They identified particles ranging in size from 20 to 500 micrometers, made of eight types of plastic, including polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, and polymethyl methacrylate. The researchers say they have provided preliminary evidence that various microplastics can accumulate and persist in the heart and its internal tissues.
