Mars Days are Getting Shorter: Scientists Surprised by the Acceleration

August 24, 2023

Days on Mars are becoming shorter, but scientists are puzzled as to why. One day on Mars is approximately 37 minutes longer than on Earth, but this difference has started to decrease. Researchers have discovered that the rotation of Mars is speeding up, albeit slightly - by just 4 angular milliseconds per year. However, this is enough for the Martian day to become shorter by a few fractions of a millisecond each year. It remains unclear why the planet is accelerating. Researchers speculate that it may be caused by a mass displacement due to ice accumulation on the polar caps or the rebound of landmass after being covered by glaciers.
