The ancestors of modern kangaroos could not jump.

Zoologists have determined that some extinct kangaroos may not have used jumping to get around. They moved in other ways, such as on all fours. Analysis of the bones showed that the high-speed, high-intensity jumping typical of today's large kangaroos was likely rare or absent in many species, including their direct ancestors.
