Researchers from Sweden and Denmark have found traces of polychlorinated biphenyls at the bottom of a trench in the Pacific Ocean. These substances have been banned since the 1970s because of the damage they cause when they bind to the tissues of living organisms. They have been used in electrical equipment, paints, coolants and many other products.
