Scientists painted the ocean off the coast of San Diego pink to see how fresh water and heavier salt water mix in the surf. The experiment will help to figure out how pollutants enter the ocean through rivers and sewage. Pink dye is environmentally friendly. Its spread across the ocean will be monitored using drones, special sensors along the coast, and a jet ski with a fluorometer that can measure the light emitted by the dye.
