Napoleon and cologne

November 28, 2022

According to various sources, the emperor used from one to 40 bottles a day. He washed with it, and rubbed himself after the bath (which he took every day), and drank (in its pure form and diluted with wine), and strangled the horses. He used the legendary cologne of perfumer Giovanni Farina Cologne 4711, or Cologne water. It was produced in Cologne (it’s easy to guess), and the perfumer described the smell as follows: “The aroma reminds me of a spring morning, mountain daffodils and oranges blooming after rain.” These perfumes are still on sale today, by the way.
