According to Dan Brule, a pioneer of the Spiritual Breathing movement, even just reading Shakespeare's sonnets is therapeutic. “Reciting certain verses and prayers slows your breathing to about four to eight breaths per minute, which lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels,” Brule says.
