Monsoons accelerate climate change, as they lift atmospheric pollutants - gases and aerosols - into the stratosphere and spread them over a large area. The South Asian monsoons create a layer of harmful substances about 16 kilometers above the Earth. It contains industrial, agricultural and transport emissions. The layer covers the regions of West Africa and parts of the Pacific Ocean.
